When visiting Madrid, sooner or later you will come across one of the most beautiful city boulevards in Europe: the Paseo del Prado. The Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen-Bornemisza, three museums that together are among the most important art collections in the world, are located on a stretch of almost two kilometers. No other district in the world concentrates so much art history in such a small space. This is why the term „Golden Triangle of Art” has long since established itself as a proper name for this district.

The Museo Nacional del Prado is the centerpiece. Anyone who walks through the long halls with works by Velázquez, Goya and El Greco will understand why the Prado regularly ranks among the three best art museums in the world. Velázquez's Las Meninas, Goya's Black Paintings and Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights are not works of art that you only know from books. Standing in front of them, you suddenly understand why people travel to Madrid to see them.

The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza is just a few minutes' walk away: here, paintings range from the 13th century to American modernism - van Eyck next to Hopper, Caravaggio next to Mondrian. The collection is the result of one of the most ambitious private art acquisitions of the 20th century and has been open to the public since 1992.

The third pole of the triangle is the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía - Madrid's museum of modern and contemporary art. Its most famous exhibit is Picasso's „Guernica”, the large-format memorial against fascism, which alone justifies a visit. But the works of Dalí, Miró and an entire generation of Spanish avant-garde artists also make the Reina Sofía an experience that goes far beyond this one painting.

All three museums are within walking distance of each other and can be visited in a relaxed tour on a long day. If you want to take it easy, you can spread your visits over several days thanks to the 365-day validity of the Paseo del Arte pass.

The best time to visit the museum without long queues is early in the morning directly after opening or on weekdays outside the Spanish school vacations.
